A hobby can be defined as a regular activity done for enjoyment during leisure time, usually involving creativity, skill building, or personal interest. They can fall into three categories; casual, serious or single based projects (I am certain there are many more). Hobbies offer great health benefits, boost creativity and problem solving skills. They can reduce stress and improve quality of life. That’s what my dictionary has on the subject.
I agree – but with that, like an iceberg floating on the ocean, is only a tiny part of the of what is visible. I love shopping for great food. That became a passion for Farmer’s Markets, Organic Food, meeting the farmer that grows it, socialising with people and listening to live music. It is fascinating to visit with people from diverse cultures, hear about some of their foods, love stories, music and customs. I always ask “what do you feel I should do whilst I am in your neighborhood?” “Great list from a love of good food.”
When I was a boy I used to sit with my Mom to watch couples ice dance. I still love it. Now when I watch, if I have Mom’s favorite blanket with me, she is right there with me even though see has passed. Then came Gene Kelly. He was a White Knight, my Hero. Next was Fred and Ginger. After all that was River Dance and Lord of the Dance. So I tried clogging. I showed up in my steel toed work boots and gave it a whirl. The class was one hour. I lasted 45 minutes. My noggin’ was full. Darn good effort it was. I came back the following week and made it to 50 minutes. Third week in and I made it the full hour and without the work boots! Ha! I did that for two years and decided to give it up for ballroom dancing. Ah ha! A passion for dance had been kindled, lit and stoked!

Motorcycling – each trip is an adventure. That goes for three hour rides, a two week ride and I am certain – a five year trip around the world!
This is all intimately linked – as we all are. What are your passions, hobbies, pursuits and interests? What drives you? What tugs at you? Mostly, what calls to you from within – that quiet, strong gentle voice of encouragement that asks you to become more? To interact and communicate? To be your one true self – boldly. What do you choose?
I choose to be the solution.
